About PJM
PJM Interconnection, operator of the world’s largest competitive wholesale electricity market, has been providing reliable, safe electricity for nearly 80 years.
The company was formed in 1927 when three utilities chose to interconnect to realize the benefits and efficiencies of sharing resources, creating the world’s first continuing power pool. In 1998, PJM became the first fully functioning Independent System Operator, with responsibility for the safe and reliable operation of the transmission system and administration of the competitive wholesale electricity market. In July 2001, PJM became the nation’s first fully functioning Regional Transmission Organization.
PJM today operates the world’s largest centrally dispatched electric grid. Through a series of market integrations from 2002 to 2013, PJM’s territory now covers about 243,417 square miles in 13 states – Delaware, Illinois, Indiana, Kentucky, Maryland, Michigan, New Jersey, North Carolina, Ohio, Pennsylvania, Tennessee, Virginia and West Virginia – and the District of Columbia.
As part of its responsibilities, PJM manages a sophisticated regional planning process for generation and transmission expansion to ensure future electric reliability and to enhance the economic benefits of the grid and the markets. Delegates from more than 70 nations have come to PJM to learn about its market model and its operation of the regional grid.
